Disney ABSOLUTELY must have Danny DeVito reprise the role of Phil for the live-action remake of Hercules.
Now that Disney has confirmed that a live-action Hercules is in the works, fans have already begun to fan-cast the film. And while it's still in the early stages with no casting to be announced, Danny DeVito absolutely must return to play Phil, the satyr in the hero-training business who becomes Hercules' mentor in his journey to become a worthy hero. DeVito voiced the character in the 1997 animated film and his performance is a fan favorite. He should return to the role for the same reason James Earl Jones returned as Mufasa for the photo-realistic The Lion King remake. After all, you can not do better than perfection.
DeVito is the perfect actor to portray the hot-headed mentor. He has the exact right temperament for the role. He is especially gifted at the ability to play angry and explosive without also being violent or unlikable. He demonstrated in Jumanji: The Next Level his ability to play the cranky "I'm too old for this" type character while remaining endearing and likable. Phil is an undeniable hot-head, but DeVito's vocal performance balances that out with a character audiences care about. He might be angry, but he also demonstrates softer emotions.
